Plus a free goody bag for all your labour and postnatal needs!
Newborns are coated in a waxy substance called the vernix, with some babies only having a small amount and some having a lot! Dedicated cells that are important to fetal development start to produce it at around 27 weeks. You shouldn’t wash it off; instead, rub it in as it’s a perfect natural moisturiser!
Show
The “show” is the mucus plug that is secreted by the cervix to protect the womb. It varies from mother to mother, including in its colour. Its secretion is usually painless, and it’s not always a sign that you’re even going into labour, as it can happen a few weeks before. It can come away once, regularly or not at all!
Umbilical Cord
Your midwife will clamp your baby’s umbilical cord just after birth with a plastic clip near the belly button. The midwife will then cut the cord, but sometimes your birthing partner may want to do this! This leaves a small part remaining with the clip attached, which will take about a week to drop off once it’s dried out. You just have to keep it clean and dry until that time, and if you notice any bleeding or discharge, then be sure to inform your midwife, health visitor or GP.
