Ultrasound has been widely used in medical imaging since the 1960s. In medical circles it is recognised as an extremely useful and safe tool; There is no evidence that diagnostic ultrasound has ever produced any harm to adults, children or the human foetus and embryo. However we follow the British Medical Ultrasound Society’s guidance for the safe use of diagnostic ultrasound equipment.

Our sonographers are highly skilled & experienced in pregnancy ultrasound scanning, and able to offer trans-abdominal and trans-vaginal scans. While most ultrasound scans are performed over the tummy (abdominal), sometimes a trans-vaginal scan is necessary. We will always explain clear the process and obtain your consent. Our sonographer will always discuss this with you and will let you know if a trans-vaginal scan is required.
Pregnancy scans before eight weeks of pregnancy are often ideally performed as a transvaginal scan. This will allow the clearest view. At this very early stage of pregnancy, we recommend do not bring children for this scan appointment.
Fertility scans and women health scans are best performed as transvaginal scans.
